LIVE BLOG: MLL Draft 2008

by Ben Cohen on May 29, 2008

10:58 p.m., Draft Concludes: And that’s all she wrote from Hoboken tonight. Loftus goes undrafted, and we’ll keep you updated with his plans for next year. Overall, four Duke players drafted, all in the first 27 picks. National champion Syracuse led the way with five players.

10:05 p.m., Ward Goes To Denver: Midfielder Michael Ward, another fifth-year guy, was just picked by Denver in the 27th slot. A mea culpa on our part: when we talked to an MLL official after the draft declaration deadline yesterday, he told us only four Duke players had filed the necessary paperwork. Ward wasn’t on that list. So, now, Loftus is the only Blue Devil remaining. Let’s hope we don’t have to say it a third time.

9:51 p.m., O’Hara Headed Upstate: Defenseman Nick O’Hara broke the stream of Blue Devils to the Garden State, as he was picked 22nd by Rochester. O’Hara was probably Duke’s best defenseman and almost certainly its best offensive defenseman. Now, goalie Dan Loftus is the only draft-eligible player still waiting to hear his name called.

9:25 p.m., McDevitt Joins Danowski: Defenseman Tony McDevitt was just picked No. 12 by New Jersey, the same squad that selected Danowski earlier in the draft. McDevitt just finished his first year at the Fuqua School of Business. The Pride is making some intriguing addition to its roster, as it had four of the 10 first-round selections. If you’re interested in more complete coverage of the draft, also check out Inside Lacrosse’s live blog.

9:00 p.m., Danowski Selected No. 2: Blue Devil attackman Matt Danowski was the second pick in the 2008 Major League Lacrosse Draft Wednesday night in Hoboken, N.J. Danowski, the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer, was picked the New Jersey Pride, who also added Syracuse’s Mike Leveille with the third pick. Johns Hopkins’ Paul Rabil was the first pick, even though Danowski was projected No. 1 overall by Inside Lacrosse last week.
