Wake Forest Leaps Duke To No. 2

by Ben Cohen on January 12, 2009

Here’s some news Mike Krzyzewski may not demand that the media report: Despite winning twice this week, Duke slipped a spot to No. 3 in the country Monday.

But the demotion has less to do with the Blue Devils and more to do with an undefeated Wake Forest team that secured a marquee win last night over North Carolina. The Demon Deacons received two first-place votes–in our opinion, it should have been even more–and moved ahead of Duke by just eight votes. Pittsburgh remained No. 1, while North Carolina, the team that just 10 days ago was considered unbeatable, slipped to No. 5 after its second loss of the season.

Another hot ACC team, Clemson, moved into the top 10 at No. 10.

Duke’s game against Georgetown Saturday will be a matchup between the No. 3 and No. 13 team in the country, as the Hoyas dropped four spots after a loss to Notre Dame this week.
