Hansbrough Breaks ACC Scoring Mark

by Ben Cohen on March 19, 2009

Move over, J.J. Redick.

Tyler Hansbrough is the ACC’s new scoring leader.

Hansbrough hit a free throw with 15:43 left in North Carolina’s opening-round game against Radford Thursday to give him 2,770 career points, the most in ACC history. The crowd in Greensboro gave him a short standing ovation. Coming into the game, Hansbrough needed just three points to break Redick’s scoring mark, and he tied the record with with an early jump shot.

Last week at the ACC Tournament, it looked as if Hansbrough would break the record in the Tar Heels’ semifinal game against Florida State. Redick even asked a Duke official for Hansbrough’s cell-phone number so the former Duke star could call or text the Tar Heel and congratulate him on the accomplishment.
