Last night’s thrilling Boise State-Virginia Tech game, in which the Broncos came back in the fourth to win 33-30 thanks to inspired play from Kellen Moore, has all of America buzzing this morning.
Just don’t count David Cutcliffe as impressed with the denizens of the bright blue field.
On 620 The Buzz this morning, Cutcliffe said the Broncos’ win was the result of the Hokies’ mistakes, and he said that he still felt Frank Beamer’s squad was better.
You can’t make mistakes in the kicking game, nobody emphasizes it more than Frank [Beamer]. But they were clearly the best team guys, anybody that watched the game could tell that Virginia Tech was the dominant team physically.
They didn’t win but this stuff about we can’t compete with the best…. you know Boise’s a good football team. They’re not a dominant physical football team. Gimme a break on some of the publicity.
Ouch!
Real well coached, good team, got some great skill players. Not as good a football team as Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech just blew the ball game.
Why the strong words from Cutcliffe? An ACC man defending his conference, or something else?

I was originally going to say I was simply disappointed in Cutcliffe’s thoughts here, but they seem to be downright incorrect. Boise State ran for 40 more yards despite 20 fewer carries; it outgained Virginia Tech, and it won the game despite committing more penalties and turnovers.
To reduce this game to VT’s mistakes overlooks the major ones the Broncos made, most notably the roughing the kicker that turned a missed field goal into a second-quarter touchdown.
Boise State’s defense may have made the Hokies’ offense look more explosive than it has in years, but the Broncos’ offense went to work as much on Bud Foster’s defense as Alabama last season and LSU in ’07 — two teams that went on to win the title, mind you. (Seriously, how easy did that final drive for Boise look?)
There it is folks. Tim has said all that needs be said on this one.
What is Cutcliffe thinking?
Except that VT earned the first down/td (had to go 5 yards)
BSU got gifted 17 points in the first half. Fumbled snap, roughing the punter, blocked punt.
VT played better for 3 quarters.
Not to mention the bogus late hit call.
Mistakes are part of football. The great teams take advantage of those mistakes and make you pay for them. Let’s see how many mistakes Duke creates in thier game with Va Tech. and will they be good enoungh to take advantage of them? I doubt it!! BSU out played Va Tech in just about all aspects of the game. The ACC needs to take it like a man and not whine about it.
And that is exactly why you coach at Duke, and not at a major program. Did you pay attention to Boise’s D-Line? Stopped Matthews almost everytime… except for the 2 rushing TD’s, from two yards out. Tyrod did have a field day, but Boise’s D-Line was dominating on putting pressure on Tyrod and stopping the rush.
Cutcliffe is an ACC shill. A total moron who obviously couldn’t recognize decent Football if it bit him on the butt. Otherwise, why would he be at Duke? Virginia Tech’s defense ran for a 2.9 ypc average. They gained less yards, had the ball for less time, and that’s with Boise State committing 12 penalties for about 120 yards. For Cutcliffe to say what he said is astonishingly obvious in its motivation. Good thing he wasn’t hooked up to a polygraph, he’d have broke the damm thing.
dude, what game was he watchin? Boise controlled the line of scrimmage most of the came. They held Williams to 41 yds on 22 carries and offensively boise averaged 7 yds per carry compared to 2.9 for vatech;not the sign of a team that got physically dominated.Did tech make mistakes in the kicking game? yeah, but so did boise, they missed a field goal, had a running into the kicker on a missed kick that led to a td and had 11 penalties.Cmon davey, pull your head out and give credit where credit is due, boise went into an extremely hostile environment and outplayed tech plain and simple.DONT BE A POLITICIAN!
David who? Does Duke even field a football team?
Did he watch the same game as the rest of the country?
BSU averaged 7 yards/carry and gave up 1 sack.
VaTech averaged 2.9 yards/carry and gave up 5 sacks.
Clearly VaTech was the more physical team???
VT did not play better than Boise State. That is ridiculous. BSU held their allegedly unstoppable, dynamic running back duo to a grand total of 44 and 12 yards respectively for the game.
In the first quarter Virginia Tech made the majority of the mistakes and Boise State capitalized. From that point on it was BSU making the majority of the mistakes to let Virginia Tech back in the game. It had nothing to do with Virginia Tech dominating.. they simply were given the ball in short field situations and were able to produce points. The exact same thing Boise State did in the first quarter.
BSU had more total yards both passing and rushing. They had more sacks against Tyrod Taylor and controlled the line of scrimmage. They committed more turnovers AND more penalties but were still able to walk away with the W. Not to mention it was an absolute home game for Virginia Tech. Clearly, the better team won despite playing far from their perfect game.
Whats good for the goose…… So, the fact that Va Tech was “gifted” 21 pts by your logic is irrelevant?? 2 fumbles by Boise State in their own territory = 14 pts and a roughing the kicker that netted another 7.
In 09 Va Tech averaged 4.7 yards per carry, yet they averaged 2.9 against BSU and their D gave up 7 ypc. The star RB, who ave 127 a game last year, got 44 on 21 carries for a nice 2.1 ypc.
Sounds like somebody got physically dominated….
Go back and watch the game guys. Both teams had screwups…..BSU had TWO fumbles that lead to VT scores, not to mention a running into the kicker call that led to a TD instead of a stop. Do you want to know what the REAL difference in the game was? The last two drives. Kellen Moore got the ball with 1:47 seconds left. He led his team down the field for a score in 0:38 seconds. Tyrod got the ball with 1:09 left. He had PLENTY of time to do the same. Instead he went deep several times unsuccesfully and got sacked once. He wasn’t the field general he needed to be. Do some short and intermediate passes. Heck at least get in FG position to try and tie it up. The difference was Kellen Moore.
Year after year Boise proves itself on the field. That can’t seem to be said for the ACC front-runner. Four straight years of opening game losses, isn’t it, for VT? Not sure what that says….
As for being “gifted” points, Boise didn’t make mistakes like that, did they? They took advantage of VT’s mistakes, didn’t they? Oh, not to mention the “neutral game” played 2000 miles from Idaho. Give the Broncs some credit.
All evidence seems to point to the Duke coach having not graduated from your esteemed institution.
One more thing……..Cutcliffe said that VT was the physically superior football team. Well do the stats lie then? BSU gained 7 yds per carry and gave up 1 sack. VT gained 2.9 yds per carry and gave up 5 sacks……………You make your own judgments.
Boise State out physicalled them for the majority of the game. Williams couldn’t go anywhere and their running game was non existant between the tackles. Both teams played hard and I think both teams would’ve played better had the game date not been changed to labor day. Neither team would’ve had a kick blocked, nor fumbled like they did. Phil Steele actually had Boise State ranked no. 1 in special teams last year so that part of the game would’ve been more clean and we all know about Beamer ball so that would’ve been more clean as well. These people who talk about the first quarter like it doesn’t count make me laugh. If a team as a giant first half in basketball, do they use that as an excuse? How about the one or two bad innings in baseball? Give Boise State credit. Both teams played hard and in will do well this season
Hello?
Team A rushes 24 times for 7.0 yard average.
Team B rushes 44 times for 2.9 yard average.
Which team’s o-line performed better? Which team’s d-line proved more stout? If we’re talking physicality, the Bronco front seven punished the Hokies when they ran the ball. Punished. Note the times that the Bronco d-line pushed back the Hokie o-line (which had seasoned starters from last year), and kept all-ACC Williams to a paltry 2.1 yard gain.
Funny. BSU is “gifted” points after a VT mistake. But VT “earned” is points after a Bronco mistake. Fact is BSU BEAT VT. When’s the last time Duke beat a top 10 football team?
For a supposed football “genius” he sure doesn’t know how to break down and analyze the game. Maybe that’s why Duke is a perennial bottom feeder. Even Wake Forest (who has a real coach) can build a contender.
I’m not going to say Boise dominated Virginia Tech, but I think it’s safe to say Boise was the more physical team and more often than not won the battle at the line. That stats say that much, but it was obvious to anyone who watched the game.
Both teams made massive mistakes and the officiating was abysmal on both sides — you can’t say Va Tech lost because of their mistakes. Boise State blew a HUGE lead because of their mistakes. I think overall, they are evenly matched teams. But keep it coming, haters!! We thrive on doubt!
More sour grapes from BCS conference morons that want to keep out good teams, and will lie, cheat, or steal to do so. It is intellectually dishonest for Cutcliffe to say BSU did not win the game, VT lost it. Every statistic from the game either shows that BSU dominated, or that BSU overcame their own errors and capitalized on those of VT. Any way you slice it, BSU won and VT lost.
It seems to be a case of the extreme football snobbery that has dominated the ACC. Look at the stats boys and girls…..numbers do not lie.
It seems Cutcliffe is on a island. Tim maybe you should be the writer. You supported the facts much better.
this just in!!!!!SPECIAL TEAMS IS NOT PART OF FOOTBALL AND OLINE AND DLINE PERFORMANCES MEAN NOTHING,THE TEAM THAT LOOKS BETTER GETTING OFF THE BUS IS AUTOMATICALLY THE BETTER TEAM BY DEFAULT~!
-DAVID CUTCLIFFE
I think the only reason he is saying this is so people will know who coaches Duke. its all for the publicity… good job on riding the BSU coat tails!
There is an excellent way for Coach Cutcliffe to prove he knows what he is talking about; fly some 2100 miles, a couple of time zones, and a 3000 elevation gain for a game on” The Blue”. With a little work both of the teams could probably ditch one of their “open” opponents and make it happen by the 2011 season. It could be a fun game as Boise State will only loose 3 starters on offense and 5 on defense.
I used to have alot of respect for Cutcliffe, as he was always associated with Tennessee football for many years and was always looked upon as a good coach, and, I feel, still is as I really do hope he can build Duke into prominence, but granted, that would really be a miracle. To you, Mr. Cutcliffe, your team is in the same boat as Boise, so you, as much as anyone in America, should show them love and RESPECT, which you obviously are not doing. IF YOU FEEL LIKE THIS IS SO, STEP UP AND PLAY BOISE, AND GET YOUR BEATDOWN, IM SURE COACH PETERSON AND THE BOYS WOULD TRAVEL 2. 300 miles to your school to win 72-7! Teams make mistakes in all games, DUE TO PRESSURE FROM THE OPPOSING TEAMS! In closing, dont hate this team sir, INSTEAD MODEL YOUR PROGRAM AFTER THIS ONE AND YOU MIGHT BE CONSIDERED RELEVANT AGAIN.
I bet Cutcliffe voted for Barry Obama too. Hey Cutcliffe, pull you head out a get some air, you missed a great game. What an idiot. Remove this paid for vote of the crooked BSC bs.
BSU VT
Total Yards 383 314
Passing 215 186
Rushing 168 128
Yards per rush 7.0 2.9
Penalties 11-105 7-55
Turnovers 2 1
Fumbles lost 2 1
Just thought I’d put this up here.
Who was the better team? I doubt BSU’s points were the result of the Hokies’s mistakes. Look at the stats CUTCLIFE!
I am utterly baffled by these comments. I used to respect Cutcliffe and thought Ole Miss was crazy to fire him…. I just don’t undrestand what game he was watching. We are all entitled to our opinions, but this just sounds like sour grapes. He must be sensitive to all the ACC bashing given his current team is barely competitive in that conferece.
As a Georgia alum and fan, count me as someone that is totally impressed with Boise State and how far they have come. I saw a team that completely domintated the line of scrimmage and while Va Tech had their share of mistakes….by the end of the game Boise State had just as many if not more critical mistakes yet still found a way to win.
I thought Boise could beat Va Tech, but I thought they were going to have to play a perfect game and win the turnover battle. Pretty darn impressive to travel over 2000 miles make a lot of mistakes, lose the turnover battle and still find a way to beat a top 15 team. Amazing! Cutclife you are a dope!
I would like to see Davey boy’s comments about the James Madison game. Va Tech must have been more physical there too. I guess being more physical doesn’t win games.
Coach Cutcliffe back on Sept 10th I mentioned that maybe Boise St and Duke could find an open date for fall 2011 and wouldn’t you know Utah, now headed to the PAC 12, just cancelled its game dates with Boise St. We have an open date in fall 2011 so come on out for a game on “The Blue” . I know Boise St. is no physiacl powerhouse like Elon but it could be fun.
