Holden Thorp is a long-time Tar Heel, so perhaps it’s no surprise that he’s getting in on the rivalry ahead of tonight’s UNC-Duke basketball game.
While participating in a discussion on the economy with big names like Tim Geithner, the UNC chancellor managed to toss an insult down Tobacco Road.
“Our students are talking about the future and asking smart questions instead of wasting time sitting in a tent,” Thorp tweeted. And yes, the account is real.
Thorp should have done some fact-checking before mouthing off. Tenting ended this weekend, which means there aren’t any Dukies chilling in tents today.
His tweet has already provoked some harsh reactions on Twitter.
From @ramlog: @chanthorp wow what class you show as the leader of the largest public university in the state. Bet all those fb players asked a ton of ?’s
We’ve requested comment from Thorp, and we’ll let you know if he gets back to us.
Til then, why not let Thorp know what you think? Send him a message @chanthorp.

#GTHC #GTHC #GTHC .WHAT A GREAT LEADER YOU ARE.KIDS ARE SUPPOSED TO TURN TO YOU FOR GUIDENCE? #GTHC #GTHC #GTHC

The tweet from @ramlog is as inaccurate as Thorp’s comment. The largest public school in the state is NC State (but no one cares about the pack). Tonight will be like JJ’s senior night; a Carolina victory in Cameron Indoor with lots of dookies crying.
GO TO HELL DOOK!
Chancellor Thorp should quit casting stones at other schools and confine his remarks to defending his win-at-all-costs AD, his bandit football program, his head football coach who failed to notice the professional sports agency being run in the office next door or the “inappropriate academic assistence” (cheating ) being dolled out by a former member of his household staff. Get off your high horse and clean your own house.
@taxpayer: you’re just mad because we still win and you can’t distinguish unsubstantiated rumors from fact
also: u mad
Hey Chronicle,
Seriously? You’re upset with him because students weren’t sitting in a tent the DAY that he happened to tweet that comment (if he even actually used that exact phrase)? That somehow disregards the 60 days of tenting that had occurred previously to which he was referring? I know you guys are struggling to find good come backs to the Carolina dynasty, but come on. At least call your mom for ideas before posting another bogus blog like this one.
@Sarah Hiser: From your post, it is apparent that you are completely unaware of the rules of tenting. I assure you that the students do not take time off from academics for tenting as the tweet from Thorp and your post suggest. Before implying that 60 days were spent focusing on tenting and not a Duke education, might I suggest that you familiarize yourself with how the process works. It might take a few reads, however, since there is no parallel situation for the whine (no, I didn’t mean wine) and cheese crowd in Chapel Hill.
Dear Chancellor Thorp… Maybe you should start asking some questions…. like why have you had 3 scholarship BBall players leave the program in the past 8 months without your coach having a clue about their lack of satisfaction…. are you recruiting the wrong kids or is your bball coaching staff as clueless as you and your football coaches about what was going on there?
You ought to focus on Carolina as it seems like you habough to worry about in CH!
GTHCGTH!
What a dufus Thorp is, making that reference. Typical ‘Cuuurolaaahna Blew’ unearned arrogance.
Seems like a pretty good comeback to Carolina’s “dynasty” is the fact that UNC can’t seem to beat Duke recently.
typical comments from the TarWhore fans.
Once again, ol Roy’s team ends up looking like a bunch of deer staring in the headlights after the halftime break and the inevitable Duke run completely broke their spirit. Bunch of whining babies, we look forward to spanking you again on March 5 in the Dufus Dome. If you are lucky, we will then beat you for a 3rd time to make it a charm in the ACC Tournament, on our way to repeating as National Champions! Hahahahahahahahaha! Go Duke!!!!!!
Some people should stay away from Twitter…
No one seems to have taken umbrage with the fact that being in a tent doesn’t preclude one from “talking about the future and asking smart questions.” Mr. Thorp, some people do not depend on bright lights and free peanuts to engage in that height of intellectual achievement you have so shrewdly summarized in under 140 characters. Teach on.
@dookiessuck. Typical one sport mentality from, Tarhole fans concerning the Pack. They do; including Carolina play more than basketball but I’m sure you wouldn’t care about the Pack where thats concerned, especially given the outcome of other sports namely football. But then again nobody cares about the Pack.
1) to LuJones…I don’t believe the comment Hiser made had anything to do with focusing on tenting instead of academics, just that the article was making a fuss out of something that was obviously lacking much depth to begin with.
2) How does that Carolina dynasty look now? I believe a sound beating at the Dean Dome should have shut most of these comments down…with the ACC championship tomorrow…we can see, but I don’t think you dookies living in a tent for a year could help your team now. Beaten by freshmen…again. How does that feel? It’s alright though…if there is one thing you blue devils are good at, it’s a good cry.
3) I think it would get old insulting Carolina’s academics. If you are going to do that…at least make fun of State…when you all make fun of Carolina’s academics it just makes you look desperate as you have nothing else to stand on and everyone knows it’s a great school. So for once, get off it.
