Lance Thomas scored a team-high 14 points and successfully defended a potential game-winning 3-pointer in the United States’ 94-92 win Sunday over the Dominican Republic, earning the bronze medal at the Pan-American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Thomas, a starter on the Blue Devils’ 2010 national championship team, averaged 8.2 and 7.6 rebounds in the tournament. He went 5-for-10 from the field in the United States’ finale. His 38 total rebounds ranked fourth among all competitors, with 20 coming on the offensive glass.
The 6-foot-8 forward averaged 12.6 points and 5.5 rebounds in 46 games last season with the Austin Toros of the NBA D-League.
The medal is the Americans’ first since 1999 at the Games, and the team has now earned a top-3 finish in 13 of its 16 appearances.
