Kyle Gets Buckets 2.0 Even More Impressive Than First

It all started with a text message.

Three weeks after Duke’s season ended, Dave Bradley, Duke’s recruiting and communications coordinator, was on a golf course when he received a message from a number he hadn’t heard from in a while.

“Dave, do you think we can get buckets from the top of the Chapel?”

It was Kyle Singler, who wanted to make another video showing his trick shot artistry. Back in November, the then-senior teamed up with Bradley to make “Kyle Gets Buckets,” a YouTube video that now has been watched by 800,000 people and was played on SportsCenter and Pardon the Interruption. In that video, Singler had stuck to shooting in Cameron Indoor Stadium and the Mike Krzyzewski Center for Athletic Excellence—now, he wanted to go off the courts. It was a tall order for Bradley.

“I went to [Associate Director of Athletics] Jon Jackson, who had to reach out to the very upper levels of the university to get permission to do something like that,” Bradley said. Luckily, university officials “said it was cool.”

So, last Monday morning, Bradley borrowed a hoop from the Duke store and drove it over on a Gater golf cart to the Chapel. Singler, along with a crew that included the Blue Devil mascot, went up the 210 feet to the top of the Chapel with 15 balls. If Singler was going to make the Chapel shot, he would have to do it with one of those 15 balls—they didn’t have all day to try to make the shot.

“He was a little nervous,” Bradley said. “But he locked in.”

Singler began rifling shots from the top of the Chapel. Tries 1 through 3 were no good. Bradley stood beside the rickety hoop filming and could only hope he wouldn’t get hit.

“I was at an angle where it was coming at me so hard,” he said.

Singler shot again. Good.

It had only taken him four tries to swish a shot from the top. But he wanted more—after all, there were 11 more balls in the bag.

Bradley, who was growing more concerned that he would get hit, told him to bounce the next one. Singler did, and made it on his first try. He had just gone 2-for-5 from the top of the Chapel.

“It was shocking,” Bradley said. “It made no sense.”

Singler made other shots that day—from a perch on the Schwartz-Butters building near the office of Krzyzewski (who makes a cameo in the video) and from the 10-meter high dive in the Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion. According to Bradley, the shot from the high dive was one of the hardest Singler had to execute. It took him around 15 to 20 shots to pull it off.

But even though the high dive may have been tougher to make, the Chapel shot will be what Buckets 2.0 is remembered by.

Unfortunately, Singler and Bradley have now exhausted spots to shoot from on the Duke campus. But, depending on where Singler is drafted, the two may team up yet again in the near future.

“Don’t be surprised if you see Buckets 3.0,” he said.

Glover Arrested On Drug Trafficking Charge; Released From Football Team

Duke football player Tyree Glover, a sophomore, was arrested Tuesday on charges of trafficking cocaine and is being held in the Durham county jail on a $750,000 bond. He has been dismissed from the team.

According to Durham police records, Glover was charged with trafficking, possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver a schedule II substance, as well as possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver a schedule VI substance. Glover was also charged with maintaining a vehicle for sale of a controlled substance.

In a press release Wednesday, head coach David Cutcliffe announced that Glover had been dismissed from the football team. His status as a Duke student is still unknown.

Glover has played in a reserve role as a linebacker for the past two seasons, appearing in 23 games, including 11 games this season. He recorded 12 tackles this year, and played primarily on special teams.

UPDATE: Durham police officers arrested Glover on Gregson Street near Bright Leaf Square with 29.6 grams of powder cocaine, Chief John Dailey of the Duke University Police Department said in an interview Wednesday. Durham police officers then obtained a search warrant to search his dorm room, where they found 72.4 grams of marijuana. The case is being handled entirely by the Durham Police Department.

Duke Grads Shine In NBA Playoffs

March Madness may be over, but several former Duke players are making a splash in the postseason.

Ten former Blue Devils have seen game action in the past two days, making Duke the most represented school in the NBA playoffs.

The matchup of the Chicago Bulls and the Indiana Pacers poses the most interest to Blue Devil fans. Carlos Boozer and Luol Deng headline a young and talented Bulls team opposite Mike Dunleavy, Jr., Dahntay Jones and Josh McRoberts for the Pacers. Boozer and Deng finished with a combined 30 points to lift Chicago over Indiana in Game 1 despite a furious fourth-quarter charge from former Tar Heel Tyler Hansbrough. ESPN analyst Jon Barry couldn’t help but notice the Tobacco Road influence in Saturday’s game, and even likened the United Center crowd to the Cameron Crazies at the end of the fourth quarter.

J.J. Redick, Chris Duhon and Shelden Williams also suit up for teams in the Eastern Conference. Redick scored four points for the Orlando Magic in his first game back after missing 17 games due to an abdominal strain. Duhon and Williams both didn’t play in their respective Game 1’s, but could see action later as the Magic and Knicks attempt to even their series.

Associate head coach Chris Collins’s father, Doug Collins–who recently had some interesting comments about Chris’s future–is at the helm of the Philadelphia 76ers, who are back in the playoffs after winning only 27 games last year. Elton Brand, who led Duke to a 37-2 record in the 1998-99 season, scored 17 points and had 7 rebounds for Philadelphia, but it wasn’t enough as the 76’ers fell to the Miami Heat, 87-79.

In the Western Conference, Shane Battier stole the show for the Memphis Grizzlies. The 2001 National Player of the Year hit the go-ahead 3-pointer against the one-seed San Antonio Spurs with 23.9 seconds to play and iced the game with a tip-in to give the Grizzlies their first postseason win in franchise history.

Is Daniels Coming to Duke?

When DeAndre Daniels, who may be the best remaining player in the Class of 2011, announced that he was considering Duke in March, the news was unexpected. The small forward had committed to Texas in 2007, then decommitted from the Longhorns in 2009, then he seemed to be a lock to go to Kansas.

So when he said he might go to Durham for school, and ESPN’s Dave Telep wrote that he would make his official visit on the weekend of April 15, it was kind of a big deal.

Today, the story got much more interesting.

In a conference call with reporters today, Kyrie Irving may have slipped and said that Daniels will commit to Duke.

The moment came after Irving was asked if he had thought about what talent the Blue Devils would have next year.

“That’s something I’ve thought about considerably because of the talent that we’ll have next year,” Irving said. “I think this year’s team was really special and I think next year’s team would be really special if I were to return.

“I think we have about five recruits coming in with the addition of DeAndre Daniels. That’s five recruits. So it would be really special, so that would give me a chance to lead the team. . . . If I were to return, it would be a really special team.”
What do you think? Did Irving mean to say that Daniels may come in the fall, making the Class of 2011 a five-person recruiting class? Or did he slip and say that Daniels will come?

UPDATE: Daniels’ AAU coach, Dinos Trigonis, told The Chronicle that Daniels had not told him that he had made a decision yet, and he didn’t expect a decision until after the small forward makes his official visit to Duke on April 15.

Trigonis “guestimated” that Daniels would make a decision at or around May 1.
