Coach K and Team USA reacts to 80-69 win atop Brazil

WASHINGTON, D.C.–Anybody who knows USA men’s basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski knows the type of reaction he would have to the 27-17 lead Brazil held over the Americans after the first quarter of play, a span of 10 minutes.

Duke basketball junior guard Tyler Thornton who tweeted during the game, “Can only imagine what coach n them got to say right now. I bet it aint pretty lol.”

Despite that sluggish beginning, Team USA outscored the Brazilians 63-42 in the remaining three periods for a 80-69 victory as Krzyzewski’s squad concluded its exhibition tour in the United States, now heading to Manchester, England to continue tune-up games there.

“I thought they outplayed us in that first period. They were getting by our defense,” Krzyzewski said. “We didn’t have defensive intensity and if this team doesn’t have that we’re going to get scored on.”

The 1992 Dream Team only trailed an opponent once–a short two-point deficit to Croatia in the gold medal game–but Krzyzewski does not think this team has any sort of invincible-complex. With NBA talent on the Brazilian squad, including former teammates of USA players such as Anderson Varejao, who played on the Cavaliers with LeBron James, the Americans were familiar with the high level of play their opponents would bring Monday evening.

“I don’t think our team needs to be humbled. I think they are. They’re not going on the court thinking nobody else is going to show up against them,” Krzyzewsi said. “They have deep respect for Brazil’s team.”

James noted to the team that Varejao–who grabbed 13 rebounds–is as good as anybody on the offensive boards, Krzyzewski said.

Team USA’s starting center, Tyson Chandler, collected just one missed shot but said rotating on the glass takes time and is a work in progress. The frontcourt ultimately limited Brazil to 32 points in the paint compared to Team USA’s 40, but Brazil outrebounded the United States by eight.

While the Americans have only had two weeks practicing together, there has been some continuity with players and coaches, with Chandler saying his experience with Krzyzewski has made working with this year’s team easier as they finished their second game in this season, so to speak.

“This is my third tenure with Coach K–every time I learn so much from him,” Chandler said.

Both Chandler and Krzyzewski put the game in perspective with getting to play in front of their nation’s president after a weekend that included visiting Arlington National Cemetary and pregame introductions that were alternated with introductions of military personnel.

Obama visited the team during halftime, though the close nature of the game made his visit a little nerve wracking for Krzyzewski.

“He was just socializing with us. I’m not sure he knew the score of the game. I was a little bit antsy,” Krzyzewski said. “But what an honor for our team to have the president and his wife and family and for him to grace us here with his presence tonight was a fantastic gesture. He wished us godspeed.”

President Obama’s Final Four Predictions

President Obama filled out his NCAA tournament bracket with ESPN senior writer Andy Katz today at noon on SportsCenter.

The President predicted that Kansas, Kansas State, Kentucky and Villanova would all reach the Final Four.

A minor problem for Mr. Obama, however, was his misspelling of “Syracuse” when he chose the Orange to edge out Butler in the Sweet 16. When Katz informed the President that he forgot the “r” in Syracuse, Mr. Obama laughed at his mistake and joked that his daughters would tease him for the error.

Mr. Obama is an staunch supporter of North Carolina and even played in a scrimmage with the Tar Heels during his presidential campaign in 2008.

Even though his personal aide, Reggie Love, attended Duke and played on the basketball team, President Obama refused to put the Blue Devils in the Final Four and instead advanced the Wildcats.

“I finally break away from Reggie Love and pick Nova,” Mr. Obama told Katz.

Last year, President Obama picked eventual champion North Carolina to win the NCAA tournament. Do you think his predictions are right this year?

LIVE BLOG: Georgetown 89, Duke 77 (FINAL)

Georgetown 84, Duke 68, 2:10 left: Probably the most telling stat from this game is the field goal percentage disparity.  Georgetown is still shooting over 70 percent from the floor, which is absurd, while Duke is stuck at a dismal 35 percent.  Singler just fouled out, and the Hoyas just converted another and-one.

We’re done for now–check The Chronicle’s Sports Blog later tonight for postgame material.

Georgetown 84, Duke 63, 3:53 left: The “overrated” chants have started and given how the Blue Devils have performed, that’s a pretty accurate statement.  Complete debacle in the second half, as Georgetown has gotten whatever it wants on the offensive end.  A disappointing effort from start to finish here for Duke on the road.  The Blue Devils simply were not efficient offensively, shooting a low percentage from the floor, while the Hoyas did a good job playing to their strengths and using ball movement to set up wide-open looks.  You can blame the interior defense almost wholly for this loss, because Duke has built its identity this season on defense and toughness.  Neither attribute made the trip to DC today.

Georgetown 80, Duke 61, 4:46 left: It appears that Duke didn’t really learn much from last season’s loss to Villanova in the tournament.  In that game, the Wildcats used the backdoor cut repeatedly to victimize the Blue Devils, and Georgetown is doing the same thing today.  Not a good omen going forward.

Obama Shows Aide No Love

Photo Courtesy of the White House

President Barack Obama said he was “both suprised and deeply humbled” after winning the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. But after blocking personal aide and former Blue Devil Reggie Love, the president was quick to claim bragging rights.

As Fox News’s Anne Marie Riha reported on Thursday, Obama quickly had a photo enlarged to document the lighthearted moment:

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was telling members of the press about their game and subsequent photo.  ”[I]t is prominently displayed for both Reggie and, I think more importantly, the president’s enjoyment as he walks to and from meetings,” Gibbs said.  President Obama asked Love to inscribe the photo and it reads “Mr. President.  Nice block. Reggie Love.”

Love will be joining the President for a basketball game with members of the Cabinet and House of Representatives this afternoon.  No word on who’s team he will be on.

While at Duke, Love played on both the football and basketball teams. On the hardwood, Love was a member of the 2001 national title squad.

Coach K Critiques Obama On Media Blitz

In the last week, Mike Krzyzewski has been on a VIP tour of the Northeast media elite.  First, he held a TimesTalk with a reporter from The New York Times. Then, it was stops with Charlie Rose and Stephen Colbert. And yesterday morning, Krzyzewski went on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” to promote his newest book, “The Gold Standard.”

After facing an onslaught of questions he’s answered hundreds of times, Krzyzewski finally got a challenge from Donny Deutsch Wednesday, when the television personality asked him to evaluate President Barack Obama as the coach of this country.

“President Obama has a very unique thing for a leader, and that is he has the ability to inspire,” Krzyzewski said. “I would like to see him inspire even more and not get beaten down by the day to day negativity that’s involved, because he has that quality. Like, I really love President Obama. I’d follow him. Let’s charge, man. Let’s get this country back going, and to talk in that manner. I would run a fast break, not hold the ball.”

This isn’t Krzyzewski’s first time talking about Obama, whose body man is Reggie Love, one of Krzyzewski’s former players. When the president selected Duke to lose in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, Krzyzewski gave him a lighthearted jab right back, earning national attention for days.

“I get in trouble whenever I say anything,” he said Wednesday.

Obama Calls To Congratulate Tar Heels

Besides training with the Tar Heels during his campaign, President Barack Obama had another reason to root for North Carolina Monday night: He picked them to win The First Bracket. And when the Tar Heels did make POTUS look like a seer—or someone with about as much common sense as many others—Obama repaid the favor, calling Roy Williams from aboard Air Force One Tuesday night.

“The President offered Coach Williams his congratulations and thanked him and his team for vindicating him in front of the entire country,” Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said of the conversation. “The President told him he’d done a great job and asked the coach to tell the players how proud he was of them and that he looked forward to seeing them at the White House soon.”

Reggie Love probably isn’t as excited to see the incoming swarm of Tar Heel blue.
