Gerald Henderson returns to campus to get his degree

Gerald Henderson took his talents to the NBA after his junior season in which he scored 16.5 points per game and snagged 4.9 rebounds per contest for the Blue Devils. Now, four years later and less than a week after Duke’s Class of 2013 graduated, Henderson is back in Durham to pursue his diploma.

Duke Blue Planet broke the news of Henderson’s return to college with this instagram photo of Henderson with his backpack. During his time at Duke, Henderson majored in psychology and was pursuing a certificate in markets and management studies.

1st day of class. After averaging 15.5 PPG in the NBA, @ghjunior09 is back chasing that Duke degree.

Henderson has blossomed into a valuable NBA commodity over the past two seasons, averaging more than 15 points in both seasons and starting 113 of the 123 games he played. Henderson is due for a pay raise this offseason when he becomes a restricted free agent. He is expected to draw interest from teams looking for a scoring punch from the backcourt.

Duke-North Carolina “Kings of Tobacco Road” exhibition confirmed

Correction: According to his personal Twitter account, Jay Williams will not coach the Duke team at the Kings of Tobacco Road game, as an earlier version of this article stated. The Chronicle regrets the error.

The Chronicle confirmed Monday that the rumored Kings of Tobacco Road game between basketball alumni of Duke and North Carolina will take place Nov. 17 at 8:30 p.m. Rob Blair, founder and CEO of Bleid Sports, one of the event’s presenting sponsors, told The Chronicle that an agreement is in place to host the game at McDougald Gym at N.C. Central, but no official contract has been signed by the two parties.

Blair also confirmed that the Duke roster will feature a who’s who of former Blue Devils, including Kyrie Irving, Nolan Smith, Corey Maggette, Chris Duhon, Elton Brand, Gerald Henderson and J.J. Redick. The North Carolina team includes Jerry Stackhouse, Rasheed Wallace, Brendan Haywood, Antawn Jamison, Vince Carter, Raymond Felton and Donald and Shammond Williams, Blair confirmed.

Blair also said that he is in talks with other former players with both schools to participate.

The event will be co-hosted by Bleid Sports, a tournament organizer founded in 2010, and S.J.G. Greater N.C. Sports, Inc., an organization co-founded by North Carolina great Jerry Stackhouse to organize summer pro-am leagues in which members of both the Blue Devil men’s and women’s basketball teams have participated. The two sponsors will also host Clash in Cameron, a Dec. 17 showcase of high-school teams in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Henderson, Hansbrough Face Off Wednesday

Nolan Smith, Kyle Singler and crew aren’t the only ones taking on Tar Heels tonight—Gerald Henderson will face Tyler Hansbrough tonight in Indiana.

The interesting timing of the game wasn’t lost on Henderson as he talked to Dave Glenn on his afternoon radio show yesterday. And despite the fact that Henderson did not know the location of the game today (seriously, G?), he had plenty of thoughts on the Duke-North Carolina rivalry—even if his boss, Michael Jordan, hasn’t had much to say about it this week.

“He’s not talked much about the game,” Henderson said. “I’m not sure if he’s too confident in his team tomorrow, the way they’re team has been going.”

Henderson revealed that the main topic still brought up to him by strangers has to do with a Duke-North Carolina incident: his infamous elbow to Hansbrough’s nose. It was a shot that offered itself to easy speculation: Tar Heel fans will most likely never believe it to be accidental. Duke fans, likewise, will always be it was unintentional.

“‘Did you do it on purpose?’ Everyone wants to know that [laughs],” Henderson said. “Hopefully nothing [like that] goes down tomorrow…. It kind of just epitomizes the rivalry. That particular game got to that…. Stuff like that is going to happen.”

Henderson also commented in the interview on the major differences in intensity between the professional and collegiate games. When at school, Henderson and Hansbrough would spend all year thinking about playing against each other. Now, they’re playing in just another midweek game.

“I’m going to Indiana to play a Wednesday night game against the Pacers and [Duke is] going to play the most intense game in college basketball. All the effort and practice time and scouting they put into that one game, it’s almost like a championship game. Tomorrow, we’re playing a game that we haven’t even scouted yet.”

Gerald Henderson Gets Better of New Boss Jordan (w/ Video)

Michael Jordan has promised to make his mark as the new majority owner of the Charlotte Bobcats, and His Airness went as far as joining in in the team’s shootaround this morning in Charlotte. After the workout, Jordan challenged former Duke guard Gerald Henderson to a friendly game of H-O-R-S-E. But despite what would seem to be an intimidating matchup with the former NBA and UNC Tar Heel legend, Henderson rose to the occasion by defeating Jordan not once, but twice.

From the AP’s Mike Cranston:

One of Michael Jordan’s first acts since reaching a deal to buy the Charlotte Bobcats: losing two games of H-O-R-S-E to guard Gerald Henderson.

A trash-talking Jordan attended the Bobcats’ shootaround Monday morning before their game against Dallas, challenging the rookie Henderson to a shooting competition after the workout.

While Jordan made a free throw with his eyes closed and relentlessly needled Henderson, he couldn’t hold him off in either game.

Perhaps Henderson’s strong showing against his new boss will help the rookie see more time on the court for the Bobcats, who are on the cusp of qualifying for the playoffs for the first time in team history. Henderson started out the year strong by recording double-digit point totals in four of his first seven games, but he has seen limited action so far during the second half of the season.

UPDATE: We’ve just unearthed some video of Henderson’s victories, via the Charlotte Bobcats’ official team site. Enjoy…

Henderson Names His Best Dunk

Know what I do when Duke loses? I go to YouTube, and I watch Gerald Henderson dunk over people. (OK, maybe this cure was more effective when, you know, Henderson still wore No. 15 for Duke, but let’s not get nitpicky here.) So it was completely fortuitous that I recently ran across Dime’s interview with Henderson, in which Gerald Narciso, the interviewer, asked the former Blue Devil about his crazy hops:

Dime:You’ve had some amazing dunks at Duke, like that monster slam against Maryland. Is that your best dunk ever? (Flip Murray, who is sitting in the locker beside Henderson interrupts.)
FM: I’m gonna say yeah…I’m definitely gonna say yeah. That’s the one he’s got on his phone.
GH: (laughs) I’ve had a couple of good dunks in my career, but that was definitely my best one.

Duke fans will be excused if they’ve found their Morphine drip for the afternoon.
