James Marvel, the No. 74 baseball recruit in the nation according to ESPN.com, was selected in the 2012 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins with their 37th round pick, the 1120th pick overall.
Marvel, a native of Morago, Calif., is a 6-foot-3 pitcher who is touted by scouts for his potential and high-quality makeup.
Marvel likely will not sign with the Twins as such a late draft pick and instead join the Blue Devils next year. Marvel certainly would have been selected higher in the draft if teams believed they had a chance at signing the right-hander, convincing him to forgo his commitment to Duke.
UPDATE (4:56 p.m.): Marvel’s father, John, has confirmed over the phone that James is coming to Duke next year and will not sign with the Twins.
Duke starting pitcher Marcus Stroman was selected in the 1st round of the draft, 22nd overall by the Toronto Blue Jays. Stroman became the first Blue Devil to be taken in the first round of the MLB Draft.
