Jasmine Thomas Traded to the Washington Mystics

Jasmine Thomas has been traded to the Washington Mystics in a three-team deal, according to a team press release.

Storm will receive former Mystic guard Katie Smith, center Jacinta Monroe and the Indiana Fever’s 2012 second round pick. The Fever will add guard Erin Philips and the Storm’s 2012 third round pick. Thomas will head to Washington with two 2012 draft picks—the Storm’s first rounder and the Fever’s third rounder.

Thomas was selected just weeks ago by the Seattle Storm with the 12th overall pick in the 2011 WNBA Draft.

The 2010-11 Full Court Press ACC Player of the Year will join three other Blue Devils with the Mystics, highlighted by the Blue Devils’ first National Player of the Year award winner, Alana Beard. Also, Thomas will once again be on the same team as classmate Karima Christmas, Washington’s second round pick and 23rd overall. Two-time All-American Monique Currie rounds out the list of former Duke players in Washington.

Thomas has simply moved from one talented squad to another. The Storm won the WNBA championship a year ago behind the play of forwards Lauren Jackson and Sue Graham alongside WNBA legend Sue Bird.

The Mystics had a similarly successful 2010 regular season, earning the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference after amassing a 22-12 record. However, the team fell to Atlanta in the first round of the playoffs.

LIVE BLOG: No. 5 Duke 66 vs. Boston College 53 (FINAL)

FINAL: No. 5 Duke 66, Boston College 53

With staunch defense and excellent post play the Blue Devils have picked up their second win of the weekend to improve to 9-1 in ACC play.  Krystal Thomas led Duke in scoring with 16 points, and Christmas, Vernerey and Gray also made significant contributions on both sides of the court.  That wraps up our coverage here today.  Check out dukechronicle.com tomorrow for more extensive coverage of Duke’s win.

3:51 2nd Half: No. 5 Duke 62, Boston C0llege 50

Duke has built a comfortable lead with absolutely smothering defense.  Boston College is having a hard time moving the ball, and Krystal Thomas and Kathleen Scheer have come up with big blocks in this final stretch.  If the Blue Devils protect the basketball and continue to defend with intensity, they should emerge with the win.

8:23 2nd Half: No. 5 Duke 54, Boston College 43

The Eagles are hanging around, due much in part to Thoman’s steady barrage of three-pointers.  But Duke is slowly taking controlling of this game, absolutely dominating the Eagles in transition and in the paint.  The Blue Devils are doing an excellent job hustling down the floor and pushing the ball down low before Boston College has set up its defense.  Thomas and Christmas continue to put points on the scoreboard, scoring 12 and 14, respectively.  Gray has also created several big plays en route to scoring 9 points.

12:22 2nd Half: No. 5 Duke 43, Boston College 38

Duke regained the lead with some serious hustle, and the crowd is loving every second of it.  Vernerey has been all over the floor fighting for rebounds and hitting tough lay-ups from the post.  Shay Selby hit a contested shot on a break away that brought the crowd to its feet.

15:48 2nd Half: No. 5 Duke 37, Boston College 33

Both teams came out of the locker room playing extremely aggressive defense and running up-tempo offenses.  Jasmine Thomas has been sticking close to Boston College’s Thoman, but she still managed to drop another trey.  Vernerey scored on a breakaway off of a beautiful pass from Chelsea Gray, and Christmas continues to put points on the board after being fouled on a break away.

Halftime: No. 5 Duke 29, Boston College 28

The Blue Devils cling to a one point lead as they head into the locker room.  The Eagles are big and athletic down low, and Murphy and Swords have lived up to the hype by combining for 12 points so far.  This statistic isn’t too dominant, however Duke’s focus on controlling the paint has opened the door for Boston College’s guards to take advantage of open looks from outside.  The Blue Devils have only hit two treys, both by Gray, while the Eagles have knocked down four.  In the second half, the Blue Devils must reestablish their perimeter defense.

Duke seniors Christmas and Krystal Thomas are leading the scoring with eight points each.  Christmas has added four offensive rebounds and Thomas has been cleaning up the glass on the defensive end, picking up three boards.

3:57 1st Half: No. 5 Duke 25, Boston College 23

The Eagles have closed the gap behind Thoman’s 8 points.  Boston College has more size down low and they are using it to chip away at Duke’s otherwise smothering defense.

7:31 1st Half: No. 5 Duke 25, Boston College 19

The Blue Devils are starting to build a lead behind excellent play from seniors Christmas and Krystal Thomas.  Thomas scored four straight points with a nice spin move from the post followed by a long two from the top of the key.  Christmas added four more with a drive to the basket and then a quick jumper.  Just before the timeout, Gray hit a lay-up and drew a foul.

11:39 1st Half: No. 5 Duke 15, Boston College 13

Even though Boston College’s Thoman came up big with back to back threes, the Blue Devils managed to stay on top behind another trey from Gray, as well as lay-ups from Thomas and Christmas.

14:54 1st Half: No. 5 Duke 8, Boston College 7

This game has been extremely fast paced so far with both teams running the floor and taking shots at the first open opportunities.  Both Murphy and Swords have hit easy buckets, and the Eagles received a big trey from Doherty.  Meanwhile the Blue Devils were down until Gray hit a three from the top of the key.

No. 6 Duke 75, Southern Cal 50, FINAL

With tough defense and strong play in the paint, the Blue Devils have picked up their second win of the season over USC, and Coach P has picked up the 400th win of her career. Duke’s next game is Nov. 18 away against Auburn.

No. 6 Duke 68, Southern Cal 47, 2:30 2nd Half:

As the game comes to a close, Chelsea Gray has ensured that Duke is coming away with a win.  Showcasing her many talents, Gray dropped a trey, drove to the hoop, and then hit Krystal Thomas down low with a quick pass.  Freshman Tricia Liston also took advantage of her playing time, hitting a three from the corner.

No. 6 Duke 54, Southern Cal 35, 11:29 2nd Half:

Vernerey and Peters continue to control the post and put points on the board, but the Trojans refuse to go away.  Led by vocal guard Ashley Corral with ten points, USC is hanging in there.  The Trojans are being very aggressive on both sides of the ball, forcing the Blue Devils to commit fouls on defense.  For Duke, Thomas continues to roll with 12 points.

No. 6 Duke 40, Southern Cal 22, Halftime:

It’s been a very physical game thus far, but the Blue Devils have overpowered the Trojans and head into the locker room sitting on top of an eighteen-point lead.  Even though the Blue Devils have a plethora of sharpshooters on the outside, they have been absolutely dominating in the paint on both sides of the ball.  Of their forty points, 22 were picked up down low. Vernerey has been cleaning up under the basket with five offensive rebounds, and freshman Haley Peters has brought down seven rebounds on defense.  The Duke defense has been very strong, forming a wall on the perimeter and forcing the Trojans to take bad shots.

No. 6 Duke 35, Southern Cal 20, 3:24 1st Half:

Senior Jasmine Thomas is up to her usual tricks, cutting hard to the basket for lay-ups and on defense, swatting balls into the crowd.  She also picked up a steal and broke away down the court for an easy two, bringing her total to nine points.  Duke has gotten noticeable more aggressive on defense and committed several fouls.  However, USC hasn’t been able to take advantage and the Blue Devils have established a fifteen-point lead.

No. 6 Duke 24, Southern Cal 16, 7:51 1st Half

As each Blue Devil freshman cycles into the game they make an impact on the offensive side of the ball.  Richa Jackson hit a three-pointer and then added another bucket, while Chelsea Gray tallied a score and a steal. Duke was beginning to pull away and its defense was solid until several lapses opened the door the the Trojans to fight back into the game.

No. 6 Duke 13, Southern Cal 7, 14:46 1st Half:

Both teams got off to a slow start, committing meaningless fouls and having trouble penetrating on offense.  However, Duke began to build a lead after freshman Chloe Wells hit a trey from the corner that sparked the scoring.  Sophomore Allison Vernerey entered the game and immediately made her presence felt by picking up a bucket in the paint despite being fouled.  She made the foul shot and later followed up with another score.

After a hard fought win in their season opener against BYU Saturday night, the Blue Devils are anxious to get off to a faster start against the USC Trojans.  Cameron is somewhat empty, but the fans that came out tonight are excited for tonight’s matchup. Duke head coach Joanne P. McCallie is looking to win the 400th game of her 19-year career.

Blue Devils Picked As Favorites In Preseason ACC Poll

With three starters returning and the No. 1 recruiting class in the country ready to make big contributions, head coach Joanne P. McCallie’s squad was tabbed preseason conference favorite by an overwhelming margin—earning 24 of 33 first-place votes— ahead of second place North Carolina and third place Florida State.

The Blue Devils will be led by senior point guard Jasmine Thomas, who was picked as preseason ACC Player of the Year and was named to the preseason All-ACC first team. The dynamic floor general averaged 16 points per game, to go along with 4.3 rebounds and 4.1 assists.

Jasmine Thomas will have plenty of options when running the offense, as veterans Krystal Thomas and Karima Christmas return for their senior seasons, along with letterwinners Allison Vernerey and Shay Selby. Duke will have plenty of new firepower as well, as evidenced by the outstanding performances by the freshmen class in this past weekend’s Blue-White scrimmage. Richa Jackson and Chelsea Gray, both named to the conference newcomer watchlist, had 16 and eight points, respectively. Freshmen guards Tricia Liston and Chloe Wells each had 18 points in the scrimmage as well, and should factor into McCallie’s gameplan.

Jasmine Thomas named third-team All-America

Duke’s season may have ended prematurely, but Jasmine Thomas’ breakout junior campaign didn’t go unnoticed. The junior guard earned AP All-American honors today, being named to the third team.

Thomas was consistently the focal point for opposing defenses this season and responded with her best year as a Blue Devil, emerging from the shadow of graduated seniors Chante Black and Abby Waner. The junior led the team with 16.0 points and 4.3 assists per game and recorded the third triple-double in program history in November in the Caribbean Challenge.

She was named to the All-ACC first team and earned the Kay Yow Award as the top student-athlete in the conference. In the ACC Tournament, Thomas led the Blue Devils to their first tournament championship since 2004 and was named Most Valuable Player. The junior followed up that effort with a solid NCAA Tournament, earning all-Regional honors.

Thomas was selected to the All-America third team along with Oklahoma’s Danielle Robinson, Kentucky’s Victoria Dunlap, Xavier’s Amber Harris and former Connecticut recruit but current Delaware star Elena Delle Donne.

The first team was littered with Huskies as forward Maya Moore and center Tina Charles were both unanimous selections for Connecticut. They were joined by ACC Player of the Year Monica Wright of Virginia, Jantel Lavender of Ohio State and Kelsey Griffin of Nebraska. The Blue Devils defeated both the Cavaliers and the Buckeyes this season at Cameron Indoor Stadium, but fell to the Huskies at home, 81-48, tying a season-low for points that was matched in the team’s Elite Eight loss to Baylor Monday.
